Berkeley

The screening will be held in Sibley Auditorium moderated by Novella Carpenter author of the best-selling memoir Farm City, featuring these amazing panelists:

  • Lynn Huntsinger is a Professor of Rangeland Ecology and Management, and Chair of the Division of Society and Environment at the University of California-Berkeley.  For more than two decades, she has worked directly with ranchers, with the goal of learning how long-term, sustainable management of rangelands can be created.  Her ongoing studies include research on oak woodland landowners and management in California and Spain, land fragmentation and conservation in oak woodlands, and participatory management strategies.
  • Bill Niman is a cattle and turkey rancher in Northern California, proprietor of BN Ranch, and Founder of the natural meat company Niman Ranch, Inc. He has been providing naturally raised beef, pork, and lamb to fine restaurants and retailers for more than thirty years.   In contrast to the conventional meat industry, Niman's animals are always raised using traditional husbandry methods, eschewing hormones, antibiotics, and slaughterhouse feed additives. Niman has been named “Food Artisan of the Year” by Bon Appetit magazine, the “Master of Meat” by Wine Spectator, the “Guru of Happy Cows” by the Los Angeles Times, “a pioneer of the good meat movement” by the New York Times, “the Steve Jobs of Meat” by Men’s Journal, and a “Pork Pioneer” by Food & Wine. He has also won numerous awards, including the "best bacon....hands down winner" by Cook's Illustrated.
  • Nicolette Hahn Niman is an attorney and livestock rancher. She served for two years on the Board of Overseers of the Boston-based organization Chefs Collaborative. Much of her time is spent speaking and writing about the problems resulting from industrialized livestock production, including four essays she has written on the subject for the New York Times. Nicolette is a regular blogger for the food section of the online version of The Atlantic Monthly and has blogged for Huffington Post and CHOW. Previously, she was the Senior Attorney for the environmental organization Waterkeeper Alliance where she was in charge of the organization’s campaign to reform the concentrated livestock and poultry industry, and, before that, an attorney for National Wildlife Federation. She served two terms on the city council for the City of Kalamazoo, Michigan (pop. 80,000), during which time she served on sixteen community boards and commissions including the Environmental Concerns Committee. She received her Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1993 and her B.A. in Biology and French from Kalamazoo College in 1989. She lives in Bolinas, California with her son, Miles Robert, and husband, Bill Niman, founder of Niman Ranch, a natural meat company supplied by a network of over 600 traditional farmers and ranchers.
  • John Wick is a research rancher, co-Founder of the Marin Carbon Project, Thermopile Project, and Carbon Cycle Institute. A consortium of university researchers, government agencies, agricultural organizations, family foundations, and volunteers, the Marin Carbon Project has developed and tested a plan that uses existing natural mechanisms to stop and reverse global warming.  Implementation of the plan will simultaneously recharge renewable carbon-based resources while producing safe and healthy food, fuel, fiber, and flora. John, who has a background in project management, is now a manager of microorganisms at the watershed scale.  He currently collaborates with a herd of borrowed cattle and their digestive systems to restore the coastal prairie system on his research ranch, the Nicasio Native Grass Ranch.
  • Maura Fisher is the fifth generation in her family to continue in the ranching business - her Irish ancestors immigrated through San Francisco in the 1860s and began herding sheep around Dublin and Livermore. They took their salary in sheep and once they'd put together a band (~1000 sheep) they walked them north to Lake County, Oregon - at the time a nearly unsettled frontier. Ever since then her family has ranched in and around Warner Valley, where Maura attended a two-room school. Her family has recently expanded their high-desert operation to Northern Nevada. Maura’s parents were founding members of Country Natural Beef, an innovative beef marketing cooperative of which her parents were founding members.
  • Gareth grew up around livestock in rural New York but his family did not earn a living from agriculture. Among other jobs he worked on school breaks for a sheep farm before moving to eastern California to attend Deep Springs College. On a cattle ranch relying on student labor he was introduced to the details of landscape-scale rangeland livestock production. Having caught the cowboying bug he worked for a handful of large ranches between Nevada and California while finishing school, and finally endured the true rite of passage of working for his in-laws on their ranch in Northern Nevada. He has a  Master's in Range Management from UC Berkeley, currently works for BN Ranch - the pasture-based meat company founded by Bill and Nicolette Niman, and runs cattle in the East Bay hills.
  • Graham Meriwether is the director of American Meat.
